With the sun hopefully making more of an appearance this summer, we are very mindful about keeping children safe when they are playing outside on sunny days. In order for us to do this we ask parents to provide a sun hat and sun cream for their child while they are at nursery. We keep children in the shade on particularly hot days and ensure that they are drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Sun safety is important, and we support children in understanding the need to wear sun cream and a sunhat right from an early age. Some of the older children enjoy singing/listening to a fun song all about it. A short video called ‘Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide’ can be found online and is a great educational resource for children.
Choosing an effective sun cream for children can be overwhelming with all of the varieties on offer. We do advise that factor 50 is most suitable for children and that it is replaced after a year, as the factor halves and is less effective. It is also worth paying attention to the UVA star rating on bottles. This indicates the percentage of UVA radiation absorbed by the cream, which can be harmful to skin. We recommend that you choose one with a 4-5 star rating which will protect skin from 80-100% of these harmful rays.
Enjoy the sun and stay safe!
